Anne Binder – Bio

Anne Binder is a calligrapher, papermaker, and book artist.
Her work has been widely exhibited
throughout the United States and Canada.
Her works are a part of both private and public collections.
Her artist book, “Your Words Come to Me Like Loving Hands”
received the 1999 Newberry Library Purchase Award
from the Chicago Calligraphy Collective’s annual exhibit.

Anne co-founded the Michiana Calligraphy Guild in 1992. She served as
the Director of the
Days of the Handmade Book and RiverLetterDance.
She is a past-president of the international
Association for the Calligraphic Arts.
She teaches lettering and book arts both on a local and national level.
She holds memberships in several art related organizations.

Creating art and facilitating others
to create art is a very important part of Anne’s life.
She believes art is the pathway to peace.
She encourages collaborations among artists’ groups
fostering interdisciplinary relationships.
Project Hope is a collaboration of fifty-five artists
offering their responses to the events of September 11.

She has studied traditional lettering skills and gilding techniques
with master calligraphers and has adapted many of the traditional uses
of lettering and techniques to create contemporary art.
Her work has been published in several calligraphic journals.

From 2005 through 2010, Anne owned Studio Arts and Galleries
in South Bend and Mishawaka, Indiana.
She is looking forward to 'retirement' from administrative work to concentrate
on doing series of creative works. She will also continue teaching
from her home studio.

Anne lives in South Bend, Indiana with her husband and two sons.
