Anne Binder Artist Statement I am a lettering artist. I paint words. Words are my images. As a composer uses notes to record the sounds he hears, I use signs, symbols, and letters to record the emotions and visions I feel and see. Words are my images. I use paint and the ageless tools of scribes to make my marks. I use a wide array of metal nibs, hand cut quills, pointed and flat brushes, and even popsicle sticks to create the letterforms I choose to express the words. The canvas pieces are paste-painted using a wide variety of water-based mediums (acrylics, watercolors, inks, gouache, and pearlescents) to create layers of texture and text. My texts come from poets I have come to know. Their words have become food for my pen. I am deeply grateful to my poet friends for allowing me to paint their poetry. My method of creating is improvisational. The works you see are done in the moment. There are no roughs, mockups, or proofs. I familiarize myself with my poets' words and allow myself to feel the emotions they evoke so deeply within my spirit. I go directly to the canvas or paper and begin. Viewers will see many words painstakingly written one letter at a time. The viewer may be daunted by the necessity to read each word, but I assure you, please do not feel this obligation. I invite you to browse and scan. Maybe you will be compelled to gaze beyond the layers of text to feel not only my passion for the written word, but also hear the passionate voices of the poets. Above all else, I sincerely hope you are able to view my work with the understanding that the image has the last word. |
