CANVAS:
THE NEXT FRONTIER
Now that you have collected a wide array of papers and are storing them in
every available corner of your home and studio, why not try a new ground
to work on? Canvas!

In this workshop we will use Ross Art Paste, water-based paints,
inks and pigments to create backgrounds for lettering using your
broad-edged nibs, pointed nibs, and other calligraphic tools.

This workshop can be one or two days.

The second day could be spent painting and further developing
the canvas or spent lettering on the canvas.
Painted Backgrounds

By blending watercolors, gouaches, and various inks unique backgrounds
and surfaces can emerge for lettering.

We will work through some basic color theory that will help participants
choose a palette of colors for their backgrounds.

There will be numerous demos throughout the day showing various simple
techniques that can be created to enhance background textures.
Much of the day will be spent in the spirit of experimenting and playing.
Water medias can be unpredictable!
Painting With Your Muse
A Retreat Setting Class

This workshop is designed, but is not limited to,a retreat setting.
Participants will work on large sheets of Arches Text Wove or canvas
using Ross Art Paste as the medium to carry the paint.
Our exploration will include creative journeys to find the
unique muse that resides in us all.

Participants can expect to paint to a wide variety of music looking for the
connection of sound to the process of painting expressively.
We will also use our sense of smell and touch to further enhance our
connection with our personal muse.
The workshop is about the process of creating.

Pasted papers/canvas will provide a home for not only brush lettering, but
also a wide variety of lettering tools such as the conventional broad-edge
and pointed nibs and the unconventional folded
and ruling pens…not to mention whatever tools you may feel
inspired to dip into paint for mark making.

The workshop can be a two, three, four, or five-day experience.
Paste Papers Extravaganza

A guaranteed crowd pleaser!
This workshop should come with a disclaimer that warns
participants of the possible dangers of developing a pasting addiction.

We will use wheat paste and art paste to achieve various textures
and designs to create glorious decorative papers.

There will be numerous demos throughout the day showing various
simple techniques to enhance background textures.

Much of the day will be spent in the spirit of experimenting and playing.
Hand Paper Making

There is nothing like making your own paper to use
in your creative projects.

Using cotton pulp that has already been prepared for use, participants
will learn the basics of forming and couching sheets of paper, pouring
techniques, sculpting, and pulp painting.

Pulp will be colored using natural teas and commercial pigments.
Participants can experiment with inclusions such as
flowers, confetti and colorful strings.

Participants will be shown how to make their own pulp in a blender
how to dry their papers, information about supply resources,
·        and shown examples of what to do with their finished papers

General Information
Regarding Workshops

I thoroughly enjoy sharing my
experience with fellow artists.
All the workshops described can
be modified to suit your
specifications.

My daily fee is $4
50 based
on a seven-hour teaching day.
The sponsoring group shall pay
transportation costs.
I prefer to travel by air, but will
drive to destinations within a
three-
hour radius of my home.
I will make travel arrangements
with the objective of obtaining
the least expensive airfare
possible within my personal
time constraints.
Reimbursement of driving costs
can be negotiated.

I enjoy staying with a
workshop participant.
I do require a non-smoking home.
While I adore animals,
I am allergic to cats and dogs
so I prefer a household that is “pet-
free”.

I am very easy to feed and only
ask for low-sodium meals.
I also NEED my daily dose of
orange juice in the morning.
No coffee for me.

With the recent restrictions on
baggage allowance on airlines, it
may be necessary to have some
of my supplies shipped ahead and
ask that the sponsoring group
reimburse me for
the shipping costs.
This may be the case for the
canvas workshop.
To save these costs, I may ask the
sponsoring group to provide
materials for me.

Please feel free to contact me if
you should have any questions.
I like to think of myself as being
flexible and willing to adjust to a
group’s specific needs and desires.
